Did you know that November is National Career Development Month?
This month-long awareness campaign – spearheaded by the National Career Development Association in 1967 – highlights the importance of personal career development and planning as well as the importance of employers providing tools for their employees’ development.
Last week we highlighted what employees can do to help with their own career development, this week we are featuring how employers can help their employees develop their careers and will discover why upskilling not only benefits their staff but also benefits the business…
Career Development and Employers
According to LinkedIn, only 37% of employers feel that their entry-level employees have the necessary soft skills to do their jobs, while a recent World Economic Forum report found that 54% of all employees “will require significant reskilling and upskilling in just three years”.
The onus of career development is no longer on the employee, employers are increasingly choosing to provide tools to their workforce to upskill their staff, the benefits of which include:
Staff retention and engagement – Investment in employees’ career development show that the business values their success, this therefore leads to staff feeling more valued and and engaged. Engaged staff are more likely to remain with a company and therefore creates a more stable and experienced workforce.
Improved performance and productivity – if a business upskills its employees, it equips them with the tools to help them succeed in their jobs. This therefore helps to increase productivity, efficiency, and innovation.
According to The Society for Human Resource Management replacing employees who leave can cost from one-half to two times the employee’s annual salary AND two years of lost productivity
Attracting top talent – top talent is likely to be drawn to businesses that offer career growth, skilled individuals are very often eager to invest in their futures.
Development of Future Leaders – by providing upskilling opportunities a business can not only prepare their staff for future roles but also ensure a seamless transition in times of succession.
